GOING GREEN WITH PHARMANIAGA

Launches Solar Power Project At Six Facilities

Key highlights:

  • Solar project offers long-term sustainability benefits and cost savings
  • Projected to yield up to 15% savings on monthly energy costs and a 10-20% reduction in carbon emissions
  • Annual electricity cost savings up to RM2.7 million, with projected savings of RM70 million over 25 years

PETALING JAYA, 28 November 2024 - Pharmaniaga Berhad (Pharmaniaga) ramps up its Going Green programme with the launch of its latest renewable energy initiative through Solar PV System Project in collaboration with Cenergi SEA Berhad (Cenergi).

Going Green is Pharmaniaga’s Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) deliberate effort to incorporate environmentally sustainable practices into its operations, products, and overall strategy which reflects a commitment to reducing the Group's environmental footprint and addressing global sustainability challenges.

The partnership was formalised today through the signing of Heads of Agreement (HOA) by Pharmaniaga Managing Director Zulkifli Jafar and Cenergi Group Chief Executive Officer, Hairol Azizi Tajudin, marking a key milestone in Pharmaniaga's commitment to harness clean energy.

This project requires no capital expenditure (CAPEX) from Pharmaniaga, offering both long-term cost savings and environmental benefits. This initiative aligns with the Malaysian Renewable Energy Roadmap (MyRER) to encourage energy transition and support the nation’s agenda to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2050.

Zulkifli highlighted the initiative’s impact, stating, “This project, which is part of our Going Green programme, represents a significant step in reducing Pharmaniaga’s carbon footprint by decreasing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.”

“Pharmaniaga has been at the forefront of solar energy adoption since the launch of our first outright purchase solar project at the Sungai Petani manufacturing facility in 2019. By 2023, this facility had already generated almost 800 MWh of solar clean energy, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability,” he said.

Building on this success, Pharmaniaga is expanding its renewable energy footprint to six additional facilities at the following locations:

  • Pharmaniaga Logistics Sdn Bhd, Section 7, Shah Alam
  • Pharmaniaga Logistics Sdn Bhd, Section 15, Shah Alam
  • Pharmaniaga Manufacturing Berhad, Bangi
  • Pharmaniaga LifeScience Sdn Bhd, Puchong
  • Idaman Pharma Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Sungai Petani
  • Idaman Pharma Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Sri Iskandar

Zulkifli added, “Installations are scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2025 and are expected to be fully energised and gain clean solar energy by end of the year. Once ready, the project is expected to deliver approximately 15% savings on monthly energy costs and achieve a 10–20% reduction in carbon emissions, in line with our long-term sustainability goals.”

This initiative aligns with Pharmaniaga’s sustainability strategy and its key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – Supporting the transition to renewable energy solutions
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – Encouraging efficient resource use and reducing environmental impact
  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – Indirectly improving health outcomes by addressing climate-related risks such as air pollution from fossil fuels

Cenergi, a subsidiary of UEM Lestra Berhad, is a leading sustainable energy solutions provider in Malaysia. With a strong track record in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, Cenergi offers clients innovative rooftop solar leasing options, combining affordability with environmental responsibility.

Zulkifli said, “Pharmaniaga is proud to collaborate with Cenergi as this partnership enables us to significantly reduce both our environmental impact and utility costs, without requiring CAPEX.

“The Solar PV System Project represents a cornerstone of Pharmaniaga’s broader sustainability strategy. By embracing renewable energy, Pharmaniaga not only strengthens operational efficiency but also reaffirms our sustainability goals,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Cenergi’s Hairol expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are honoured to support Pharmaniaga in its sustainability journey. This project is forecasted to generate approximately 6,000 MWh of solar energy annually, which translates to avoiding 4,550 tons of CO2 emissions. This impact is equivalent to planting 75,000 trees or removing 1,000 cars from the road every year.”

In addition to the financial benefits highlighted by Zulkifli, Hairol stated “This project is forecasted to deliver electricity cost savings up to RM2.7 million annually, with total potential savings of approximately RM70 million over the next 25 years.”

The partnership between Pharmaniaga and Cenergi exemplifies a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, operational excellence, and advancing the nation’s renewable energy goals. By leveraging sustainable energy solutions, the collaboration sets a benchmark for corporate leadership in combating climate change while achieving long-term economic value.
